Story Behind “For Her”

Chris Lane‘s “For Her” is the second single from his debut EP, Fix (and is also, like Lane’s first single, “Fix,” included on his freshman album, Girl Problems). The song was co-written by Sarah Buxton, Kelly Archer and Matt Dragstrem, and Lane’s only regret about the song is that his name isn’t included in the co-writing credits … but it almost was. At a party celebrating the success of “Fix,” Lane revealed to The Boot and other reporters how he was unfortunately absent the day the three writers wrote the catchy tune.

I remember, specifically, I was supposed to be writing with Sarah and Kelly Archer and Matt Dragstrem on this day. I was almost there, and [producer Joey Moi] called me. He’s like, “Hey, man, we need to try and finish your EP. Can you just come and do vocals today? Can you cancel your write?”

I was kind of bummed out about that. So I’m down in the studio, recording vocals for some of the other songs, and Sarah sent me a text. She’s like, “Hey, come up here and listen to this song that we just wrote for you.”

I walked up the stairs, and when I heard “For Her,” I was actually mad, because I could have been a part of that write. But I loved everything about it. I grew up listening to the Backstreet Boys; there’s something about that song — when I heard it, I’m like, “Oh my God, this is like a country Backstreet Boys song, and I love everything about it.” So of course I was pumped that I was going to get to cut it.

I took it downstairs to Joey and played it for him, and he was like, “Oh, dude, this is huge. We definitely have to cut this song.” So I think the next day, maybe, we started working on that one. We stopped whatever we were working on at the moment and started working on that one.
